The learning outcomes of the Master of Health Studies program are consistent with the mission of Athabasca University (2010), the philosophy of the Centre for Nursing and Health Studies (2010), the principles of professional skills development for graduate students set forth by the Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (2008) and the degree qualification standards established by the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (2007).
Upon completion of the Master of Health Studies program, graduates will achieve learning outcomes in five areas: scholarship, knowledge translation and development, leadership, communication and technology.
Graduates will demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge in a health-related academic discipline and/or area of professional practice and be prepared to participate in further study.
Knowledge Translation and Development
Graduates will participate in the interpretation, application and creation of health-related knowledge by evaluating current research and scholarship. They will apply existing knowledge to complex questions, problems or issues and extend knowledge through research. They will maintain awareness of the complexities and limits of knowledge and the contributions of diverse perspectives to knowledge.
Graduates will demonstrate the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for leadership in complex and unpredictable environments, including the exercise of initiative, confidence, personal responsibility, integrity based on ethical principles, accountability, collaboration and sound judgment in decision-making.
Graduates will demonstrate the ability to communicate ideas, issues and conclusions clearly, effectively and concisely in a variety of forms (such as electronic, written, spoken and visual forms) to a variety of audiences (such as peers, the general public and decision makers).
Graduates will demonstrate competence in selecting and applying contemporary and emerging computing, information and communication technologies to support scholarship, knowledge translation and development, leadership and communication.
